United States, Canada, Europe: If you are in the United States or other countries where cars drive on the right side of the road, you should walk on the left side when you are on a two-way road. Britain: If you are in Britain or countries where vehicles drive on the left side of the road, you should walk on the right side when you are on a road with two-way traffic.

Why you should walk facing traffic. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to stay safe on foot. Sure, you drive on the right side of the road, but that’s not where you should be as a pedestrian. You should always use a sidewalk if there’s one available, but if you need to stay on the road, the CDC recommends walking toward traffic.

To keep yourself safe while you’re out walking, remember these rules: Face Traffic. If there is no sidewalk where you’re walking, walk on the side of the road where you’ll be facing oncoming traffic. That means that if cars drive on the right side of the road, as they do in North America, you should walk on the left.

A sidewalk (North American English), pavement (British English), footpath (Oceanian English), or footway, is a path along the side of a road.Usually constructed of concrete or asphalt, it is designed for pedestrians. A sidewalk may accommodate moderate changes in grade (height) and is normally separated from the vehicular section by a curb (spelled "kerb" outside North America).

Small groups should keep to the right-hand side of the road so you can see oncoming traffic. Keep close to the side of the road and be prepared to walk in single file. If you come across a sharp right-hand bend it may be safer to cross to the left-hand side of the road and cross back after the bend.

Pedestrians must use footpaths (sidewalks) where provided and, if walking on a road without a footpath, should keep to the left-hand side, facing oncoming traffic. There are manned patrols at road crossings on busy roads outside or near schools. This article is an extract from Living and Working in America. Click here to get a copy now.
