To train an older dog to walk calmly on a leash, stop walking as soon as your dog pulls on the leash. Then, hold the leash firmly, but resist the urge to pull the dog back to you, which will only cause it to pull harder in the opposite

5. Continue moving forward. Gradually start encouraging the dog forward while holding the leash with 'come' and provide a treat. A few steps at first, then several steps, then farther and farther until the dog is walking comfortably moving forward on the leash.

Walk a couple of paces, then turn around and re-enter the home. Allow them time to calm down – consider even removing their leash and collar if you wish – then try again. Eventually, and probably after dozens of repetitions, your dog will be so bored they will opt to stay calm, at least for the first stage.

Instead of planting your feet when your dog pulls and waiting for his attention, try issuing a “let’s go” cue, turn away from him, and walk in the opposite direction he is pulling. Instead of jerking or yanking the leash, speak in an excited voice to get his attention. Read Also: Crate Training an Adult Dog.

When your dog pulls at the end of the leash, stop immediately and do not budge. Never allow your dog to move forward when it is pulling or lunging. This way, you are teaching your dog that the only way to get where it wants to go is by leaving some slack in the leash. As soon as there is some slack in the leash, you can begin again.

Hold the lead in your left hand and treats in your right hand. Use the treats to lure your dog round to your right-hand side so they are standing, facing the same direction as you. The lead should be crossing over your body and held loosely with your left hand only. Feed them a treat.
