What distances are walkers being expected to walk this year? While we are encouraging people walk one of the four typical distances – 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon - the walk is YOUR WAY. You can make the walk anything that works for you! As you begin to plan your walk, make sure to keep in mind places you can stop to use the restroom and carrying food/drink.

The walkers are part of a group of 9,500 people expected to take part in the event, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Tara Shuman walked the course for the first time in 2013, after being diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer and undergoing surgery and then treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Walkers are treated to 12 refueling stations along the course, as well as poster-sized photographs of inspiring “Walk Heroes” at each mile and half-mile marker. Aim for a brisk walk of 30 to 90 minutes most days of the week for weight loss. You can walk more on some days and less on others, but the total time for the week should be at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours). 1  You should walk fast enough that you are in the moderate-intensity exercise zone at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate.
How Walking Speed Affects Mile Time. Is there a universal standard for a fast, moderate, or slow walking pace? Actually, yes. Fitness experts tend to use these general guidelines. Fast: 11 minutes per mile. Moderate: 15 minutes per mile. Easy: 20 minutes per mile
