Yes, if you absolutely have to, you can walk on a sprained ankle. You should take it slow and put weight on it gingerly at first until you understand the severity of the sprain. A grade 1 sprain causes little damage to the ligaments, and although the ankle will be tender for a few days, you can walk on it after a short period of rest. At grade 2 sprain , there is some tearing of the tissues and a longer recovery time of up to 4 weeks.

The fact that you could not walk on ankle immediately after injury indicates a possibly severe sprain, with or without fractures (just because you could walk on it a day later does not mean no broken bones-- people unknowingly walk on broken bones too often).
