Resting after surgery is important, but walking after open hernia repair is actually recommended. In the days following your surgery, you can start walking around as soon as you are able. Staying in bed might seem like the more comfortable choice, but getting up and taking a few short walks throughout the day will help you heal faster.

Gentle exercise, such as walking, can help the healing process, but you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for about 4 to 6 weeks. You may find sex painful or uncomfortable at first, but it's usually fine to have sex when you feel like it.

With the exception of heavy lifting and vigorous exercise you can resume normal activities, including driving, walking and sexual activity, once you feel you are ready. Pain is the body's way of letting you know you are doing something you shouldn't. If it hurts don't do it.

Do go for a regular walk and gradually switch to long walks as it increases the circulation and you heal faster. Remember do not strain the abdomen. Heavy exercises at the gym, or lifting more weights can resume without restriction after a few weeks or when you are completely pain-free, after the surgery.(Also Read: Exercises After Hernia Surgery)

This happens in about 20-25% of patients after hernia surgery. But after 5 days or so, patients start feeling better. For several weeks, a few patients may feel aches or stretch feel in the groin area while moving. It is normal for men to have bruises on the scrotum and along the penis after the surgery (usually for large groin hernias).

Patients are often able to go for a gentle jog the day following the operation and steadily get back to normal routine. Indeed, we encourage as much activity as is comfortable as soon as possible. With our techniques, it is virtually impossible to undo or damage the repair.

Patients spend only a couple hours in recovery following most hernia surgeries. You will be discharged as soon as you are awake and able to walk. While the rest of your first day will likely be spent resting, it is important to start walking on the next day after surgery, even briskly, but avoid walking up stairs or hills for the first several days.
